Movie Review: Ligo na U, Lapit na Me
LIGO NA U, LAPIT NA ME
A film by: Eros S. Atalia

"Every great film should seem new every time you see it." ~ Roger Ebert

When my friends and I chose what movie we will be watching at the Cinemalaya, we wanted something cool, something different and unusual. When we caught an eye on the title "Ligo na Ü, Lapit na me", we immediately had a reaction that it is something that we will enjoy watching because it sounded like a romantic and funny kind of movie. Last July 18, my friends and I went to CCP to watch it.

In the start of the film, the characters were introduced one by one by the narrator who is also the main character of the movie. Karl Vladimir Lennon J. Villalobos (Edgar Allan Guzman) was the leading man in the film. He is nicknamed Intoy, a typical street-smart and ordinary guy. One day in class, Jenny (Mercedes Cabral), a  rich and quirky girl, transferred to Intoy's school and started befriending him despite of all the other guys following her. Confused, Intoy asked Jen why was she following him. Jen simply answered that she wanted to be friends with him, just plain friends. Until one day, Jen asked if Intoy wanted to hang out because they had a long break time. Jen was tempting and so Intoy gave in. The story revolved in their 'secret' bonding moments in the motel. They had pre-marital sex even if they weren't together as a couple. The weeks went by and the day came when Jen told intoy something that ruined their friendship with benefits; she was pregnant, but it belonged to another guy. Intoy was devastated because deep inside him, he felt something special for Jen. However, she was a moody girl and did not want anyone bothering her private life, even Intoy. Since the day Intoy stopped hearing from Jen, he thought about her more often. Their moments together, their fights, and the thought that what if he saw her one day, would he still love him? If he saw her one day and she was not pregnant, would he still have the same feelings as before? Or would he just simply walk pass by her? These were the thoughts that bothered him and made him stay up late and get drunk. At the last scene of the film, Intoy was walking in the city and stopped walking when he saw a girl with the same lips and eyes as Jen, but did not show the whole face. Then again, the thoughts ran in his head and that was where the movie ended. I was shocked because I was not used to watching movies that has a puzzling ending. It really made me and my friends think of what really happened at the end. It was one of those movies where the director leaves the audience with their thoughts so that they can create their own ending. All in all, watching the movie was fun because Intoy was full of humor and at the same time, it was also kind of sad because he never had the chance to tell her what he really feels.

Movie Review: Cuchera
CUCHERA
A film by: Joseph Israel Laban

Cuchera with Ma. Regina Isabel V. Patindol

The film was very much filled with obscene scenes and language but I just had to grow up and be open minded. It owes its life from the news, from stories of Filipino drug couriers abroad, about people who are trapped in a labyrinth in which trouble lurks at every exit.

It follows the story of Isabel, a veteran drug mule, in her first attempt at running her own drug transshipment operation between Manila and China.  Isabel’s character is based on the story of an actual Filipina drug mule who was caught with eight capsules of heroin lodged in her sex organ, 48 in the rectum and 11 in her abdomen after an x-ray was conducted by Chinese authorities.

Cuchera presents an accurate depiction of how some Filipinos end up becoming entrenched in the world of illegal drugs.

People have to go through this danger because they need the money. It was total eye opener.

Too pity for the victimized persons just to live their lives comfortably not knowing that it would lead them to destruction not only in law but also in health.

Movie Review: Bahay Bata
BAHAY BATA
Directed by: Eduardo Roy Jr. and Jerome Zamora

The indie film Bahay Bata is the one I chose to watch for our Film Appreciation entry. I was curious about the title of the film so I chose to watch it. The first person that came into my mind that I wanted to watch with is my Mom. The first thing that came into my mind upon reading the title was giving birth or undergoing labor.

After watching the film I appreciated my Mom, more. Witnessing how painful it is to give birth and how hard it is to be a Mother. But the story doesn't focus on one aspect only, it also focuses on the social issues. Issues that are happening in real life. The movie illustrates how poor hospital facilities are, teenagers being a mother in such young years, nurses going abroad for a better salary, facilities and job. Sarah, portrayed by Ms. Diana Zubiri, a nurse in a public maternity hospital and she observes that women are going in and out of her ward, an overcrowded ward. It was the time of Christmas day it actually happened. She was planning to have dinner with her boyfriend whom later has a wife who called Sarah to tell her to stay away from Peter, portrayed as Yul Servo. They broke up on the eve of Christmas because Peter was guilty of what he has been doing to his family. Sarah was pregnant then and didn't know what to do with her baby upon seeing mothers giving birth at the hospital and how hard it is to handle child bearing.

I come to realize how hard it is to be a Mother. What sacrifices you must do just for your baby. And this scene is actually happening in real life. It goes to show that here in the Philippines we experience such pitiful scenes in places we see everyday. The part when one Mother is asking Sarah to extend her stay in the hospital strike me the most because she doesn't know where will they stay during Christmas and New Year's Eve, and her baby is still newly born. She cannot provide the needs of her baby and decided to leave the baby in the hospital and escape.

This film made me realize a lot of things. It made me appreciate my Mother, more. I know in the future I will be experiencing child birth and this movie served as a guide, an eye-opener for me that it's not that easy to give birth. One should be responsible and appreciate the significance of life as a mother. One should be ready.

Two Thumbs up for this movie :)

Movie Review: Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa

ANG SAYAW NG DALAWANG KALIWANG PAA

Directed by: Alvin Yapan and Almberg Ang

The movie explores the connection and to difference between feminist and gay concerns in the third world context. It also shows how movie adapt based on poetry.  The movie setting if it’s not in school, it’s only in the dance studio. The movie is all about a guy student played by Paulo Avelino as Marlon, who really likes his literature professor played by Jean Garcia as Ms. Karen. Since Jean Garcia is also a dance teacher, his student Marlon planning to enroll to her class to be able to catch the attention of his professor. He is frustrated over his performance in literature class, he plans to impress her by some poetic dance movements. Suddenly, here is his classmate in literature; Rocco Naccino played the role of Dennis who is also working as a dance instructor in their professor’s dance class because he needs an extra income. Marlon hires Dennis to teach him the basic of dancing. Marlon and Dennis practice dancing if there is no dance class with the professor. Eventually, Marlon begins to understand the intersections between the art of poetry and dance.  Unexpectedly, Dennis has a heart of woman. He started to fell in love with Marlon during their practices. As a deep person, Ms. Karen  always gives Dennis a silent advice. It means she feels something different between the two young men so she’s giving Dennis an advice without using any direct words. Marlon feels that Dennis betrayed him because he thought Dennis reveal his deepest secret to Karen.  In the end, the professor is still the way for them to catch up things. Marlon and Dennis show their love story through the epic play directed by their professor, Ms. Karen. It’s like love triangle in the beginning but as the story goes, something will happen but in the end it’s not a happy ending. The movie entitled, The Dance of Two Left Feet. According to Mr. Ang, it’s all because you can’t dance alone with love and that love should always be right.

Movie Review: Ang Babae sa Septic Tank
ANG BABAE SA SEPTIC TANK
A Film by: Marlon N. Rivera

Ang Babae sa Septic tank

This year’s Cinemalaya showcased different films that everyone will surely love.  As for me, my film of choice was ANG BABAE SA SEPTIC TANK. Even before choosing, the title itself made me draw my attention on this movie. The title is catchy and when I saw the synopsis, I was enthralled. I wish to be a director someday. Seeing that the synopsis is a totally different story, I want to watch right away. It speaks about my dream, and on how would I get there. Plus, this was a comedy film so that is a double blessing to me. True enough, the film proved to me its brilliance. It was the first film I’ve watched who gave information inside film industry. It has a story, a theme and imbued in me some values which I often neglect, the value of being contented and thankful with what I have without giving up what I wanted to achieve.

The language of the film is entirely different than others.  For an average mind set of a person, no one would actually think that a depressing issue like that of the people living in slum areas and oftentimes force to give up on the uncertainties of life could be presented in a light way. I believe, from what I have seen, they’ve touched different realities on this movie.

First is the reality of life projected in the life of Mila and her children. In a light manner as it could be, they tried to instil in us the reality that, this is life, outside your safe box, these people truly exits. And this scene is constantly repeating on the entire movie so that we will remember. Second, it speaks about the reality in media and film industry. Producing a film is never an easy feat. Every detail in a film must be intact, must be given enough attention. Considerations are always part of creating a big project, and by the means of consideration, I mean the choosy and inconsiderate mainstream lead. They also show the reality that, after achieving  something, there are people, who thinks highly of themselves already, like that of the forever annoying director who cannot even straighten out his grammar. Not just that, it also shows a deep meaning on Jocelyn’s character, who did not speak on the entire film. Her character speaks for the marginalized people, for those who are not given the chance to rise out their voices. On the other side, she also speaks about the unspoken dreams of each person, on how most people behave upon reaching their dreams. Their dreams are serene, almost unheard, until, because of difficulties in life, forgotten.

From Left to Right: Kean Cipriano, Cai Cortez, Eugene Domingo, JM de Guzman

The elements of the story are present in this film as well. It is like you are reading a novel slash music score in a film manner. The story speaks for itself the entire film and the characters, composed of Kean Cipriano, Cai Cortez, Eugene Domingo, JM de Guzman, are defined. The exact location and transition of events are present as well. I see conflicts as well highly focusing on a character vs. self aspect. But the thing about this film is that, it gives broader scope on its theme and its plot is not like any other.

The Title of the film is Ang Babae sa Septic Tank. But does it say anything about a woman’s live circulating in a septic tank? No. Does it narrate a story of a woman who works or lives inside a septic tank? No. Does it speak of a woman whose lives changed because of direct involvement in Septic Tank? No. However, when I saw the end of the film wherein Eugene is trying to avoid the septic tank accidentally slipped inside it, I was opened to this realization: Mila, who was trying to live a plain and simple life, was drowned in the contagious poverty and eventually forced to give up on her life’s cruel fate.

Its Plot on another angle is a different story. Inside the story, there is another story. Inside, the story is very distinct, every sequence, defining its proper scene. But the exterior line of story, the major one, is a bit jumbled up or more like overlapping each other. This film follows a pattern that is close to surreal movies. Every scene leads you to another, but when you started to think that everything was settled already, it surprises you by putting another nerve wrecking scene at the end.

Its Cinematography is nice overall. When I first saw the film, I thought that it was mainstream movie. The quality of the video is close to excellent already. So, you won’t have to worry about watching bad quality indies.

With all the elements of the whole film present in this entry of DIRECTORS, I must say, this film deserves its slot today on the mainstream.
