Movie Review: Ligo na U, Lapit na Me
LIGO NA U, LAPIT NA ME
A film by: Eros S. Atalia
"Every great film should seem new every time you see it." ~ Roger Ebert
When my friends and I chose what movie we will be watching at the Cinemalaya, we wanted something cool, something different and unusual. When we caught an eye on the title "Ligo na Ü, Lapit na me", we immediately had a reaction that it is something that we will enjoy watching because it sounded like a romantic and funny kind of movie. Last July 18, my friends and I went to CCP to watch it.
In the start of the film, the characters were introduced one by one by the narrator who is also the main character of the movie. Karl Vladimir Lennon J. Villalobos (Edgar Allan Guzman) was the leading man in the film. He is nicknamed Intoy, a typical street-smart and ordinary guy. One day in class, Jenny (Mercedes Cabral), a rich and quirky girl, transferred to Intoy's school and started befriending him despite of all the other guys following her. Confused, Intoy asked Jen why was she following him. Jen simply answered that she wanted to be friends with him, just plain friends. Until one day, Jen asked if Intoy wanted to hang out because they had a long break time. Jen was tempting and so Intoy gave in. The story revolved in their 'secret' bonding moments in the motel. They had pre-marital sex even if they weren't together as a couple. The weeks went by and the day came when Jen told intoy something that ruined their friendship with benefits; she was pregnant, but it belonged to another guy. Intoy was devastated because deep inside him, he felt something special for Jen. However, she was a moody girl and did not want anyone bothering her private life, even Intoy. Since the day Intoy stopped hearing from Jen, he thought about her more often. Their moments together, their fights, and the thought that what if he saw her one day, would he still love him? If he saw her one day and she was not pregnant, would he still have the same feelings as before? Or would he just simply walk pass by her? These were the thoughts that bothered him and made him stay up late and get drunk. At the last scene of the film, Intoy was walking in the city and stopped walking when he saw a girl with the same lips and eyes as Jen, but did not show the whole face. Then again, the thoughts ran in his head and that was where the movie ended. I was shocked because I was not used to watching movies that has a puzzling ending. It really made me and my friends think of what really happened at the end. It was one of those movies where the director leaves the audience with their thoughts so that they can create their own ending. All in all, watching the movie was fun because Intoy was full of humor and at the same time, it was also kind of sad because he never had the chance to tell her what he really feels.
